In 1850, there were approximately 300,000 Muslims, 13,000 Jews, and 27,000 Christians in Ottoman Palestine
Waves of Jewish immigration to Palestine are known as aliyot. Aliyah means “ascent.” Many of these waves of immigration were to escape persecution, notably Russian pogroms and later, the Holocaust.
