Changing Demographics in Ottoman Palestine

  • In 1850, there were approximately 300,000 Muslims, 13,000 Jews, and 27,000 Christians in Ottoman Palestine

  • Waves of Jewish immigration to Palestine are known as aliyot. Aliyah means “ascent.” Many of these waves of immigration were to escape persecution, notably Russian pogroms and later, the Holocaust.

  • 1st aliyah: 1882-1903

2nd aliyah:1904-1914

3rd aliyah:1918-1923

4th aliyah:1924-1929
