Zotero: Using Zotero

An overview of the research management tool Zotero

Using Zotero

Zotero lets you build your library in a few different ways. You can add a citation by:

  • Manually by typing in the required fields
  • Importing it using an identifier like a DOI (journal articles), ISBN (books) or PubMed identifier (health science journal articles)
    • This is the easiest way to add citaitons when you are using Zotero through a web browser (not the desktop version)
  • Importing a citation and document using the Zotero Connector in your web browser.

After importing a citation them to fix issues like capitalizations not matching a your citation style or not having the authors full name. Note that it is best practices to edit titles of resources within Zotero only proper nouns are capitalized, similar to APA style. This will let you export the title in any citation format without issue.

Below are two PDF guides and helpful video that will orient you to the different functions of Zotero and show you the different ways to build up your library and how to add citations and create a Works Cited in Microsoft Word (Google Docs will work similarly).

Taking Notes in Zotero

Zotero has functions that let you highlight PDFs and add in notes to articles you are working with. This lets you keep track of why you saved and article and how you plan to use it in a paper
