Bullying the Media: Cultural and Climato-Economic Readings of Press Repression versus Press Freedom.
Abstract:
Journalists and media assistants in many places are murdered, imprisoned, censored, threatened, and similarly harrassed. Here I document that, and explain why, there are three climato-economic niches of press repression versus press freedom as part of broader syndromes of national culture. A 175-nation coding of documents by scientific analysts, survey responses from top executives in 123 countries, and participative observations by journalists in 155 countries led to basically the same findings. Cultures of press repression, survival values, and collectivism are most prevalent in poor countries with demanding cold or hot climates. Cultures of press freedom, self-expression values, and individualism are most prevalent in rich countries with demanding cold or hot climates. Intermediate cultures are most prevalent in poor and rich countries with temperate climates. Rival explanations in terms of a country's historic roots, population diversity, and societal inequality are ruled out and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
"Can Moving Pictures Speak? Film, Speech, And Social Science In Early Twentieth-Century Law."
This article revisits the key 1915 Mutual v. Ohio legal decision, which endorsed censorship of film in the United States. Placing the decision in the context of two other related decisions (Kalem Co. v. Harper Bros. [1911] and Pathé Exchange v. Cob [1922]) highlights the importance of the Supreme Court justices' conception of the nature of film as more akin to physical action than to opinion and expression. The article locates this conception in contemporaneous popular discourse on technology and the social scientific discourse on influence.
Creative Expression in Virtual Worlds: Imitation, Imagination, and Individualized Collaboration.
Internet use has increased dramatically in the past two decades, including the use of three-dimensional virtual environments in which individuals represent themselves via avatars and can develop and share creative content within those worlds. The authors examine the content of virtual worlds with particular attention to tools that allow expressing individuality, objects that appear to imitate real world content, as well as those that break from real world constraints. The authors also introduce the construct of individualized collaboration. Unlike face-to-face group activities in real world settings, in which the ambient conditions are largely the same for all participants, virtual worlds have properties that make it possible, in principle, for individuals to personalize their experience even while interacting with others in collaborative groups. Virtual worlds provide an opportunity to ask traditional questions about creativity in a new context, but also introduce a range of new questions that can lead to new insights and understandings about creativity in general.
CREATIVITY AND CROSS-CULTURAL VARIATION.
Abstract:
Is the nature of creativity essentially the same around the globe? The effect of cultural factors on creativity is reviewed. Distinct Western and Oriental perspectives on the definition of creativity and the creative process are described. Culture is also shown to channel creative activity by promoting certain domains, social groups, and characteristic ways of approaching the world. The effects of world-view and pressure for conformity are then presented as cultural features that relate to the nurturance of creativity across domains. The cultural variation described is supported by ethnographic and experimental evidence. Limitations on the scope of the review and methodological issues in cross-cultural research on creativity are also discussed. The effects of culture on creativity are understood within an interactive framework that incorporates both the person and the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Creativity and Culture: a two way interaction
Abstract:
Different manifestations of the impact of culture on creativity are discussed and illustrated by empirical studies. They include: (i) conceptualisation of creativity on both the explicit and implicit levels; (ii) attitudes towards creativity and values attached to creativity; (iii) channelling creative endeavour through different domains of human activities; and (iv) socialisation processes and educational goals and practices. The article argues that creativity is an individual and sociocultural perspective. It opposes the segmentation that treat creativity as either individual or socio-cultural. It discusses the nature of the influence of culture on the conceptualization of creativity and creative expression. The article also describes creativity as a cultural act, along with the link between creativity, externalization and cultural expression.
Creativity, Symbolism and Play
This paper sets forth the idea that creativity, symbolism and play are reflected in the analytical relationship as central developmental concepts belonging to the transitional space. They take place in a space between inside and outside, between subjective and objective. It all begins with an idea that appears, a pre-thought that is expressed, being nurtured or damaged, by means of words. Depending on the safety of this creative area one can play with ideas, try out new ways of expression and more fluid ways of thinking can occur giving birth to new ideas or further symbolism.

The author reflects on freedom of expression. She narrates how she and her son came up with their cuss time, wherein she allows him to speak foul language for five minutes everyday. She points out that when people's words and actions are filled with possibilities and potential, they are more likely to weigh out the options. He argues that by limiting or denying freedom of speech and expression, people take away a lot of potential.
A framework for identifying Internet information gatekeepers.
Abstract:
Issues of freedom of expression, intellectual property and data protection dominate debates concerning Internet governance, and the legal responsibility of gatekeepers is often at the centre of such discussions. A focused analysis is needed on what is meant by the term and how to identify and differentiate between the various gatekeepers. This article traces the historical development of the term gatekeeper and shows how traditional conceptions of gatekeeping are inadequate for the context of the Internet where gatekeeping primarily involves control over the flow, content and accessibility of information. A particular type of gatekeeper will be identified, termed 'Internet Information Gatekeepers', which are those gatekeepers that as a result of their control of the flow of information, control deliberation and participation in democratic culture. This article will then propose a human rights driven framework for identifying and differentiating between the various gatekeepers and their levels of responsibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Free-media-speech: Free speech and public media.
While much writing about free speech focuses on the legal constraints on expression and matters of state censorship, free speech also entails positive obligations on the state to create the conditions for diverse public communication. This article explores how the rationales for free speech support, and indeed require, public media. For mediated communication, free speech involves the promotion of diversity in speakers, topics, audiences and modes of address. All this requires more than commonly repeated debates that are framed in terms of industry dynamics and related regulatory options. It requires media free speech.

Examines the sense of freedom and interdependence in American culture. Expressions of personal wholeness; Association between survival and humanity; Basis for a secure identity.
Loving or Fearing Creativity? It's all in the Definition.
How do we make creativity a bigger part of our lives? This article begins with mentorship at Saybrook, and how at best this can open people's minds to love of learning, and finding one's own creative path, rather than fear of how "one is doing" while following someone else's well-worn trajectory. The article then moves to an original inquiry initiated by the first author as first-year doctoral student, out of concern for developing love of creativity (rather than fear) in her own students. Her professor added some research questions and joined the inquiry. The key question to 114 respondents, contacted online through social media, was "What does creativity mean to you personally?" The answer is not obvious in a culture that often links creativity only with the arts or with famous people, or with creative product--and evaluation of its worth--rather than with the joys of an open-minded creative process conducted in a risk-free atmosphere. The research involved 8 questions via Survey Monkey. Respondents emerged young, tech savvy, highly educated, and often female. Creativity evoked process for 97%, in personal terms for 75% and typically involved everyday (not eminent) creativity. Creative product came up, as did the arts, but not in isolation. Common descriptors included: ideas, imagination, and expression. The authors suggest creativity be presented to learners so as to inspire and engage, using process more than product. Some important implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The attempts made at overcoming economic difficulties increasingly highlight the horizontal and "comparative advantage" features of culture. With cultural creativity becoming a key driver of the economy, the boundaries between culture and economy are being effaced. This study examines the relationship between market and culture in terms of the tension forming between the freedom of human self-expression and the deterministic nature of the "goods-characteristics" type of cultural creations. In the broadest sense, cultural creations communicate the central issues of human existence and are characterised by the expansion of the interpretation horizon and spiritual openness, whereas the need for marketability, by definition, compels cultural creations to be particular and to provide something that is usable. The dominance of market interests may compromise the spiritual independence of cultural spheres, which, in turn, has negative repercussions on creativity and, consequently, on competitiveness. The effacement of the boundaries between high culture and popular culture inevitably warrants a discussion about the tension between culture's aristocratic nature, whose default traits include a specific sensitivity to values and creativity, and the democratic nature of the market. More Dialectical Thinking, Less Creativity? The Relationship between Dialectical Thinking Style and Creative Personality: The Case of China.
Abstract:
People use dialectical thinking to be holistic, reconcile contradictions, and emphasize changes when processing information and managing problems. Using a questionnaire survey, this study examined the relationship between dialectical thinking and creative personality in the Chinese culture, which encourages a holistic and collective thinking style. Undergraduates majoring in different subjects and adults in different professions were surveyed. The results showed that 1) compared with undergraduates majoring in art and adults from the design industry, undergraduates majoring in other disciplines significantly showed the least creative personality; 2) the highest score for dialectical thinking was found in the group of undergraduates who majored in other disciplines, followed by the adult group, and the undergraduates majoring in art had the lowest score; and 3) A negative relationship between dialectical thinking and creative personality was found mostly in the UMA group. Paradigms in the study of creativity: Introducing the perspective of cultural psychology.
Abstract: This article identifies three paradigms in creativity theory and research in psychology. The He-paradigm, focused on the solitary genius, has been followed, mainly after the 1950s, by the I-paradigm, equally individualistic in nature but attributing creativity to each and every individual. Extending this view, the We-paradigm incorporates what became known as the social psychology of creativity. The cultural psychology of creativity builds upon this last theoretical approach while being critical of some of its assumptions. This relatively new perspective, using the conceptual and methodological framework of cultural psychology, investigates the sociocultural roots and dynamics of all our creative acts and employs a tetradic framework of self – community – new artifact – existing artifacts in its conceptualization of creativity. The theoretical basis of the cultural psychology approach is analyzed as well as some of its main implications for both the understanding and study of creativity.
Political Culture, Flag Use and Freedom of Speech.
Abstract:
Flag use generates passionate debates that fundamentally turn on questions of the appropriate extent and limits of freedom of speech. The national flag is a natural and forceful medium with which to express one's views about a nation. Yet its use in this way also generates controversy and emotionally charged reactions. The purpose of this article is to assess attitudes in political culture towards flag use in the context of wider freedom of speech considerations. By analysing events in Australia, the United States and New Zealand, the article argues that public responses to flag use as a medium of political expression demonstrate a flawed understanding of the meaning, import and effect of freedom of speech and its limits. This has significant implications, exposing the extent of fragility of freedom of speech on controversial issues, and its persistence despite differences between jurisdictions in the manner and extent of free speech protection. Queer Identity Management and Political Self-Expression on Social Networking Sites: A Co-Cultural Approach to the Spiral of Silence.
Abstract:
Social networking sites can facilitate self-expression, but for some, that freedom is constrained. This study investigated factors that influence LGBT+ individuals' identity management and political expression on social media. We interviewed 52 participants aged 18 to 53 around the 2012 U.S. election. Using co-cultural theory, we investigated communicative practices employed by queer-identified individuals on Facebook. Participants whose LGBT+ identity was not known by the social network (i.e., those who were still in the closet) revealed a spiral of silence, wherein they were silenced by the perceived heteronormative majority. Participants whose identity was known (i.e., those who were out) revealed a spiral of silencing as they used the site's affordances to empower their vocal minority and silence the dominant group.
